Regarding your concern about the Slingplayer app, mostly blu-rays had built-in applications that will add value or additional features for the product like Netflix which is widely use. However, SONY cannot add so many application because the unit is still a Bluray and it was made to play disc it has product limitation on how many apps that can be use or access depending on the region and availability of the apps in the certain regions.
