However, if you decide to do it for a specific number of days like 40 days, then I'd recommend a vegetarian diet until the vow is done.

During those 40 days, you can chant any number of times - usually they say 11 or 12 times a day. On the 40th day, it is good to do annadaanam. If for some reason you have to skip some days, you can continue your parayan after those skipped days.
