You can upgrade them by playing one-off missions, sometimes with your home colony and sometimes with other ant species. The buildings are basically used for food storage and various hatcheries for different types of ants, although more of them are planned for the final version of the game. More diverse maps are planned as well, and not all of them take place underground, which should be a nice change of pace.

In addition, the graphics are quite pleasant, even if the current level design is not that detailed. In the end, Empires of the Undergrowth is a pretty neat idea, especially if you enjoy strategy games and ants.
